The Super Mario Bros. Movie is getting a new 4K Blu-ray release with a steelbook case on March 4. Exclusive to Walmart and available to preorder for $35, The Super Mario Bros. Limited Edition Steelbook will likely sell out before it’s ready to ship. Walmart’s exclusive steelbook releases of popular films often sell out well before launch, and we’re talking about the biggest video game adaptation of all time here.
Perhaps the only reason why it hasn’t sold out yet is that Walmart also has The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Power-Up Edition Collectible Steelbook in stock, too. Outside of sporadic, brief restocks, this edition has been sold out since its June 2023 release. Walmart is the only retailer with copies of the Power-Up Steelbook Edition in stock, and it’s priced at only $28.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie 4K Blu-ray Editions
You’ll need to decide whether you love Question Blocks (the new steelbook) or Super Mushrooms (the old steelbook) more. Or you could be like a-me and buy a-both. It’s also worth mentioning that the standard 4K Blu-ray edition (plastic case) is only $14 at Amazon right now, and it’s eligible for the retailer’s 3 for $33 promotion on 4K Blu-rays through January 20.

Walmart’s new Steelbook Edition of The Super Mario Bros. Movie is modeled after the iconic Question Block from the games (and film). Instead of bopping it with your head to reveal its contents, you open it like any other case. The interior of the case features landscape artwork depicting the Mushroom Kingdom’s many varieties of large mushrooms.
The steelbook case has slots for the 4K Blu-ray and 1080p Blu-ray discs of the film. Like the original release, you’ll also get a digital copy of the film. The Mario Movie is available on Movies Anywhere, so you can add it to your library and watch on any of your devices.
Walmart was initially charging $28 for preorders, but the retailer has since increased the price to $35. This price point is becoming more common for Walmart’s exclusive steelbooks. Multiple other exclusives, including The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, started at right below $30 before being updated to $35 this year. The $35 price point might be Walmart’s new default for exclusive releases like this. Even with the price bump, The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s new steelbook is priced lower than most new steelbook editions.

You can still secure a steelbook edition of the Mario Movie on 4K for less than $30, though. Walmart restocked the Power-Up Edition Collectible Steelbook when preorders opened for the new edition. Considering no other retailers have listed it since, this edition is likely exclusive to Walmart now, too. If you were to buy the Power-Up Steelbook Edition from Amazon right now, you’d wind up paying around 50 bucks to a reseller. But at Walmart, at least for now, The Super Mario Bros. Movie Power-Up Steelbook Edition is only $28.
This edition has a black case with a Super Mushroom on the front and back. The interior artwork is a landscape shot of the Mushroom Kingdom leading up to Princess Peach’s Castle. It also comes with 4K Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and digital versions of the movie. The only differences between the two are the case and when your order will ship.

Super Mario’s longtime nemesis has an upcoming steelbook release, too. And no, we aren’t talking about Bowser. Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s Limited Edition Steelbook is up for preorder at Amazon and Walmart. No release date has been revealed, but you can secure Sonic 3 on 4K with a collectible steelbook case for $43.49 at Amazon or $45 at Walmart.
