Incredibly faithful to the beloved original, Super Mario RPG is a charming Switch game enhanced with several quality-of-life changes that make it more approachable to newcomers. Mario RPG veterans will appreciate the series of post-game fights that really test your prowess.

Beyond those additions and tweaks, Super Mario RPG on Switch plays very similarly as the iconic original on Super Nintendo. The excellent turn-based combat still feels great today, the characters and writing are heartfelt and humorous, and the world design still has that classic Nintendo charm.

GameSpot’s Super Mario RPG review found the modernized version of the SNES classic to be a delight. “Super Mario RPG is one of the wildest games in Nintendo’s catalog. Though Super Mario RPG for Switch is only a year old, Nintendo has released two Mario RPGs since its launch. An enhanced edition of the GameCube classic Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door released in May. Also exceedingly faithful to the original release, the Switch remaster earned a 9/10 in our Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door review.

In November, Nintendo revived the Mario & Luigi RPG series with Mario & Luigi: Brothership, which earned a 6/10 in our review. While we praised the art style and story, performance issues, repetitive combat, and pacing issues make Brothership an uneven, albeit fun, adventure that’s perhaps a bit too long for its own good.

Both of those Mario RPGs as well as Paper Mario: The Origami King are on sale at Amazon and Woot, so you can save on all four Mario role-playing (physical) releases at the moment.
