The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’s Blu-ray release is slated for February 18. Three physical editions are available to preorder at Amazon, Walmart, and Gruv. The marquee edition of The War of the Rohirrim includes a steelbook case, 4K and 1080p Blu-ray discs, and a voucher for the digital version of the anime. There’s also a standard 4K Blu-ray edition for as low as $28 and a 1080p Blu-ray starting at just $23. Both of those editions include a digital copy of the film, too. If you want to watch the anime now, you can rent or buy the digital version on Prime Video for $20 or $25, respectively.

The War of the Rohirrim released in theaters December 13 and arrived on digital storefronts just two weeks later. The film failed to reach $10 million at the box office, which likely contributed to the quick digital release. Fan and critic reactions have been mixed; the anime holds a “mixed” Metascore average in both categories on GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

$38-$51
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’s Limited Edition Steelbook contains 4K Blu-ray, 1080p Blu-ray, and digital versions of the new anime. With preorder price guarantees at Amazon and Walmart, you’ll only pay the lowest price offered from the time you order and release.
Initially, War of the Rohirrim was available to preorder for $38 at Amazon and Walmart, but unfortunately the price has climbed. to $51. You can still preorder a copy for $38 at Gruv, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the price return to that level at Amazon and Walmart.
The stunning steelbook case features character art of Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Brian Cox) and Hera (voiced by Gaia Wise). The interior of the case features a map of Rohan, which is a nice nod to the books, many of which feature similarly designed maps on the interior covers or as fold-out inserts.
If you love steelbooks and Lord of the Rings, you’ll want to check out the newly released steelbook edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The Walmart-exclusive 4K Blu-ray was sold out, but the retailer has restocked the fancy version of Peter Jackson’s debut LOTR film for $35.
$28-$37.49
If you don’t care about steelbook cases, you can preorder the non-steelbook version of the 4K Blu-ray edition for $28 at Walmart. Your preorder will technically be shipped and sold by Gruv, but you’re still eligible for Walmart’s preorder price guarantee. Amazon has raised the price of the 4K standard edition to $37.49, but this could change and you won’t be charged until your order ships.
The 4K Blu-ray standard edition only comes with a 4K disc and digital copy; you won’t get the 1080p Blu-ray disc found in the Steelbook Edition. This edition reuses one of the main promotional posters for its cover art.
$23-$31
The standard 1080p Blu-ray edition is up for preorder for $23 at Walmart and $31 at Amazon. Once again, both retailers offer preorder price guarantees, and Walmart preorders are shipped and sold by Gruv. The Blu-ray edition also includes a voucher for the digital version of the anime.
The cover art for the Blu-ray edition matches the second main promotional poster released in the lead-up to the theatrical premiere.
The War of the Rohirrim was created by anime studio Sola Digital Arts. The film is set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and took inspiration from Peter Jackson’s beloved trilogy of films. Based on an entry in the appendix of The Lord of the Rings, The War of the Rohirrim focuses on the kingdom of Rohan and its ruler Helm Hammerhand–the namesake of Helm’s Deep–and the kingdom’s war with the Dunlending raiders of Dunedain.
If you want to watch The Lord of the Rings before heading to the theater to see The War of the Rohirrim, the existing 4K Blu-ray box set is on sale for only $55 (was $90) at Amazon. You can get The Hobbit Trilogy’s 4K Blu-ray box set for $59 (was $90).
Meanwhile, Walmart released an exclusive steelbook edition of The Fellowship of the Ring on January 7. After initially selling out of preorders, Walmart has restocked the film for $35. If the steelbook looks familiar, that’s because it’s the same steelbook edition found in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Limited Edition Steelbook Collection that was reprinted last year and promptly sold out. It’s unclear if Walmart will also release The Two Towers and The Return of the King individually, too.
Speaking of Lord of the Rings re-releases, the massive 5,471-piece Barad-dur Lego set launched at major retailers this month. Initially released last year as a Lego Store exclusive, the $460 set builds a Sauron’s iconic fortress, complete with The Eye of Sauron at the top of the 32-inch Lego structure. Barad-dur joins the similarly large Rivendell model as the only two Lord of the Rings Lego sets currently in production.

The Lord of the Rings 2024 Hardcover Collector’s Editions
As mentioned, The War of the Rohirrim is based on the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien wrote a ton of supplemental stories and histories of Middle-earth while drafting The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. If you want to read The Lord of the Rings (and its appendices) before or after watching The War of Rohirrim, there are some beautiful hardcover editions discounted at Amazon right now.
The 2024 hardcover Collector’s Editions of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion. These elegant hardcovers have foil-stamped cover art, stained edges, ribbon bookmarks, and maps of Middle-earth as endpapers. The Collector’s Edition splits The Lord of the Rings into its three volumes, which can be purchased individually or as a set. Amazon has The Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Box Set marked down to $76 (was $105). But it’s worth pointing out that it’s cheaper to buy the individual volumes right now. You’ll miss out on the display box and fold-out map, but you could put your additional savings toward the matching Collector’s Edition of The Hobbit or The Silmarillion.
Tolkien Illustrated Editions
We’d also highly recommend the Tolkien Illustrated Editions of The Lord of the Rings as well as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.
The big draw here is that The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition contains 30 full-color illustrations by Tolkien, but it’s also one of prettiest editions of Tolkien’s classic fantasy novel you can buy. It has red-stained edges with Elvish writing, a dust jacket with foil script and a stamped image of The Eye of Sauron. This edition also comes with two fold-out maps and a ribbon bookmark. If you’d rather not pay $47 for a book and want the full story in one volume, Amazon also The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Edition, which has a nice suede-like cover, for just under $20.
The Tolkien Illustrated Editions of The Hobbit and The Silmarillion have the same premium features and aesthetic.
